Yorkshire Housing Heat Pump Installation

“Safe, compliant retrofit across a dispersed housing stock”

The Challenge

Yorkshire Housing required a reliable and structured approach to deliver heat pump installations across multiple properties within its housing stock.

The project needed to meet high standards across several key areas:

  • Strong governance and compliance

  • Resident safety, particularly for vulnerable tenants

  • Consistent, high-quality installations

  • Comprehensive documentation and handover processes

In addition, all works had to comply with CDM 2015 regulations, ensuring clear management of residual risks and safe delivery across a geographically spread portfolio.

The Solution

Communitas Energy CIC acted as Principal Contractor, delivering a fully managed heat pump installation programme across properties in both North Yorkshire and South Yorkshire.

Our approach focused on quality, compliance, and long-term usability:

  • Every installation was inspected and commissioned to ensure it met manufacturer specifications and all relevant regulatory standards

  • A complete Health & Safety File was created and issued for each property

  • Residual risks were carefully assessed and documented, including:

    • Condensate management and drainage solutions

    • Noise mitigation considerations

    • Pipework insulation and protection

  • Asbestos information was reviewed and securely recorded within property-level documentation

Structured Handover & Documentation

Each property received a comprehensive, organised handover pack, including:

  • Building control certification

  • Electrical certificates

  • Post-install inspection reports and photos

  • System manuals and warranties

All documentation was stored in a structured, property-based folder system, ensuring easy access for future maintenance, inspections, or upgrades.

Who Benefited

Residents benefited from a professional, well-managed installation process, tailored to both the property and their individual needs.

The programme ensured:

  • Minimal disruption during installation

  • Clear communication throughout

  • Systems installed safely and to a high standard

For Yorkshire Housing, the benefits included:

  • Fully documented, compliant installations

  • Clear maintenance guidance and long-term system visibility

  • A complete CDM-compliant handover

  • A reliable framework for future upgrades across their housing stock

Why It Matters

This programme demonstrates how large-scale retrofit projects can be delivered efficiently, safely, and consistently across multiple locations.

By embedding:

  • Strong governance and compliance processes

  • Clear residual risk management

  • High-quality installation standards

  • A repeatable documentation structure

Communitas Energy CIC enabled Yorkshire Housing to scale low-carbon heating upgrades while maintaining full control over quality and long-term asset management.

Proven Partnership Model

This project builds on an established partnership between Yorkshire Housing and Communitas Energy CIC.

Previously, Yorkshire Housing utilised our Assignment of Rights (AoR) model under the Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (dRHI), where:

  • Communitas Energy supplied air source heat pump equipment at no upfront cost

  • Investment was recovered through assigned dRHI payments over a 7-year period

  • Yorkshire Housing carried out installations using internal teams

  • Communitas provided:

    • Survey and system design

    • Commissioning and MCS certification

    • Access to manufacturer training (including Daikin systems)

This collaborative model enabled multiple successful installations and continues to support ongoing retrofit delivery today.
